Planning to Elope In Vail, Colorado?
Tips For A Romantic And Secluded Wedding In The Mountains
Vail might be one of the most popular places for a Colorado wedding — outdoor adventure, luxury accommodations, and a short jaunt from the Denver airport. It’s not just a location for a classic ceremony, though. You can elope in Vail, Colorado, and enjoy the alpine views, mountain vistas, and iconic hikes, just how you like it. So here are a few tips to plan a Vail elopement that’s intimate and unique — just like your love story.
How to Elope in Vail, Colorado
Planning a Vail, Colorado elopement is easier than you might think, especially with its relaxed marriage laws. Here’s a quick guide to get you started:
- Get a Marriage License
You can get your marriage license at any Colorado county clerk’s office. The closest one is in Vail — Eagle County Recording Services. There’s no waiting period so you can get it on the day of. Both you and your partner will need valid IDs, and the cost is around $30. You also don’t need a witness in Colorado, although as your Vail elopement photographer, I’d be happy to act as a witness if you want to fill out that section.
- Choose a Location
One of the biggest decisions for your Vail elopement is picking the perfect spot. Luckily, as your Vail wedding photographer, location scouting is always included so you can elope in a place as unique as your love.
- Pick your Vendors

When to Elope in Vail, Colorado
You can elope any time of year in Vail, Colorado. From the winter wonderland to the wildflower summer, there are always beautiful views.
Spring (April to June)
Spring in Vail brings flowing creeks, fewer tourists, and sometimes the early start of wildflower season. However, be prepared for melting snow, and trail and road closures until June.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is the peak tourist and wedding season in Vail. The weather is warm, the trails are open, and wildflowers are in full bloom. You’ll typically need to plan for early morning elopements to ensure you get the privacy you need.
Fall (September to October)
Fall in Vail is stunning as the aspens turn golden, mingling with the bright greens, blues, browns, and greys of the landscape. The weather is often cool, with temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a beautiful time to elope.
Winter (October to March)
Vail transforms into a snowy paradise for couples who love the idea of a winter wonderland elopement, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. You can even get married at the ski resort if that’s your thing. Just be prepared for colder temperatures and some challenges getting to more remote locations.
How To Have Privacy During Your Vail, Colorado Elopement
Vail is one of the closer mountain towns to Denver, so finding an intimate location to elope is not always easy. As a Vail elopement photographer, I recommend:
- Getting married on a weekday (Monday to Thursday)
- Choosing an early morning time to say your vows
- Checking for events and festivals that will make Vail extra busy
- Getting scouting help from someone who knows some hidden gems in Vail (like me, your Vail elopement photographer!)
