Who am I?
meet kelly, your telluride elopement photographer
Colorado is more than just a beautiful backdrop for me; it’s home. The mountains play host to my everyday adventures, making me the local you’ve been looking for. Whether it’s hiking in Grand Junction, where I now live (an hour and a half from Telluride!) or exploring the turquoise blue lakes in the San Juan’s, I’ve got the experience to lead you through both the natural wonders and the perfect shots.
Although I’m not originally from Colorado, the mountains called to me and now I call them home. I grew up living that small town life (population: 472) in Southeastern Pennsylvania – a little place you’ve never heard of called Fawn Grove. There wasn’t a single traffic light and I lived off of a dirt road. I spent my childhood playing in the woods, digging in the dirt, exploring creeks, and never wearing shoes! Adventure was always a natural state of being to me, and to this day I still prefer being barefoot.
This business has become so much more than a job and I feel truly honored to call so many clients my friends. I’m so happy and excited that Telluride is so close to me (an hour and a half drive!), giving me the opportunity to give more couples like you the chance to elope in Telluride! It would be a pleasure to work with you and your soon-to-be spouse as we plan and execute your dream Telluride elopement in the places I now call home.
But wait, what does it mean to elope?
it’s what everyone who’s already married wishes they did for their wedding day.
But for real…. eloping is really all about stripping back a wedding day, getting rid of the fuss and production of the day and focusing on the couple. Maybe you don’t align with some of the traditions of what you’ve been told a wedding day should look like, and you’re wanting a different kind of day? Well, eloping might be the right choice for you then.

These lesser-known spots are equally as beautiful and offer a sense of exclusivity and intimacy that can’t be found at more crowded locations. If you book us as your photographers, rest assured that we will work with you to find the perfect location for your elopement, whether it’s a well-known spot or a hidden gem that only a few people know about. Bridal Veil Falls
Located just a few miles outside of the town of Telluride, Bridal Veil Falls is the tallest free falling waterfall in Colorado. At 365 ft in height, the falls themselves are a breathtaking sight, with water cascading down a steep rock face and into a pool below. The falls got their name from their appearance, as the water cascades down the rock face like a bridal veil.
How to get to Bridal Veil Falls?
Two options: Hiking from the main parking lot, or 4×4 car hiking up to the base of the falls.
Option 1: Hike the two miles from the main parking lot, which is accessible with a two wheel drive vehicle. This hike is approximately 2 miles with ~890 ft. elevation gain. We would consider this a difficult hike, and would plan for 4 hours of hiking time total (there and back, two hours up, and two hours down).
Option 2: 4×4 up Black Bear Pass and drive right up to the falls and do a short hike to get to the base. If you decide to take Black Bear Pass up to the base of the falls, make sure you have a 4×4 vehicle. There is a small water crossing, and a short wheel base is ideal for navigating the switchbacks.
Best time of Year to elope at Bridal Veil Falls
If you want to catch the falls when they’re at their peak roaring performance, elope here in the late spring when all the snow melt is coming down the mountain.
If you want to catch the golden aspens, the second week of October is usually peak fall foliage for this area.
If you want to catch the waterfall when it’s partially frozen, going mid to late October is going to be the time to go. Just be careful and be prepared for an early snowfall. Like we mentioned earlier, Black Bear Pass is not plowed or maintained after snowfall, and you should plan accordingly. If you’re choosing to hike the 2 miles up to the falls from the main parking area, plan to bring crampons, as if it snows then freezes over, you’ll be glad you have the traction of a crampon to get you up the mountain.
Pro Tip for eloping at Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls will freeze with colder temps, and the mountain pass leading up to the falls isn’t plowed or maintained after snowfall. Be sure to plan accordingly, and talk with your Telluride elopement photographer about your options of getting up to the falls.
Blue Lakes
Blue Lakes, located just outside of Telluride, are a stunning and popular location for elopements. There are three lakes in total, known as Lower Blue Lake, Middle Blue Lake, and Upper Blue Lake, with the most popular being Lower Blue Lake. The lakes get their name from their breathtaking turquoise blue color, which is caused by glacial runoff.
How to get to Blue Lakes:
There are two ways to reach the Blue Lakes: both require 4×4 and a bit of hiking. Some people would say that to get to the main trailhead, you don’t need 4×4. We suggest to do your research and determine for yourself if you believe your vehicle can make it or not. Sometimes I think a two wheel drive vehicle could make it, but then other times after a heavy rain, I don’t think i’d suggest a two wheel drive vehicle to go back there. Both hiking routes are challenging but rewarding trails that takes you through beautiful alpine meadows and offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks. There is another option which involves driving through Yankee Boy Basin, which absolutely requires 4×4 and hiking to the lakes via Blue Lake Pass. The drive through Yankee Boy Basin is a bumpy but scenic route that takes you through a series of switchbacks and offers access to a number of other attractions in the area. No matter how you choose to reach the Blue Lakes, the sight of these turquoise blue bodies of water is sure to take your breath away (and not just because of the altitude).
Best time of Year to Elope at Blue Lakes:
One of the most beautiful and memorable aspects of eloping at Blue Lakes in Telluride is the abundance of wildflowers that bloom in the surrounding meadows. From mid-July to mid-August, these meadows come to life with a riot of color, as wildflowers such as columbine, lupine, and Indian paintbrush burst into bloom. The wildflowers can reach waist-high in some areas, creating a sea of vibrant color that is truly breathtaking. In addition to providing a stunning backdrop for your elopement ceremony, the wildflowers at Blue Lakes are also great for photos and make for a truly memorable and unique experience.
Important Tidbit
It’s important to remember to be respectful of the wildflowers when eloping at Blue Lakes in Telluride. While it might be tempting to hike through the fields of colorful blooms or step on them for a photo, it’s important to remember that these flowers are a delicate and important part of the ecosystem. By not hiking through or stepping on the wildflowers, you can help preserve them for future visitors to enjoy. Additionally, it’s important to stay on designated trails and paths to avoid trampling the flowers and causing damage to the surrounding ecosystem. Enjoying the wildflowers from a distance and being mindful of your impact on the environment is the best way to appreciate their beauty and ensure that they will be around for others to enjoy in the future.
Pro Tip for your Blue Lakes Telluride Elopement:
If you’re planning an elopement at Blue Lakes and want to make the most of this stunning location, consider getting up early and exchanging your vows as the sun rises.
Plan your ceremony for sunrise for these 3 reasons:
Alpenglow: The mountain peaks that surround Lower Blue Lake face NE, which is the ideal setting for alpenglow, meaning that the peaks will be lit up with a beautiful pink and orange glow as the sun rises. This creates a truly stunning and unique backdrop for your ceremony and can make for some truly breathtaking photos.
Avoid Crowds: eloping at sunrise also has the added benefit of avoiding the crowds that tend to arrive later in the day. This can make for a more intimate and peaceful elopement experience.
Avoid Threat of Thunderstorms: It’s important to keep in mind that the mountains in Telluride tend to make their own weather, and afternoon summer thunderstorms are common, rolling in right around 1pm like clockwork. These storms can roll in quickly and bring with them lightning, strong winds, and heavy rain. While they are usually brief, they can still cause disruptions to your elopement plans. Avoid the threat of inclement weather altogether for your Telluride elopement by eloping during sunrise, and getting back to the trailhead before the storms roll in!

How to Elope in Telluride
5 Steps to Your Dream Telluride Elopement
1) Choose your location
This is the fun part! Time to explore the beautiful mountain town of Telluride and find the perfect spot to exchange your vows. From mountain peaks to charming main streets, there are endless options for your elopement location. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and choose a spot that reflects your personality as a couple.
2) Plan travel and book accommodations
Time to start thinking about logistics. How are you getting to Telluride? Plane, train, or automobile? And where will you lay your head at night? Hotel, vacation rental, or campsite? No matter what you choose, just make sure you book it in advance so you’re not left scrambling at the last minute.
3) Hire vendors
You’ll need a few key players to make your elopement a success. Photographers, florists, hair and makeup artists… the list goes on. Don’t wait until the last minute to book these talented folks – they tend to get snapped up fast. With our Telluride Elopement Packages, we give access to our vendor network to all of our booked couples. They get access to a list of vendors we love working with, so the burden of the all so time consuming task of finding vendors doesn’t fall on your shoulders, it’s already taken care of.
4) Get your Marriage License
This is a crucial step, folks. You can’t legally elope without one of these bad boys. Head to the courthouse with your ID and a checkbook (fees vary by county), and you’ll be set to tie the knot.
5) Plan the details
Now for the fun stuff! Time to think about your ceremony script, vows, attire, and any additional activities or events you want to include in your special day. Make it unique and meaningful to you as a couple, and don’t forget to have some fun along the way.
By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to planning a beautiful and unforgettable elopement in the stunning mountain town of Telluride. Just don’t forget to pack your hiking boots and your sense of adventure, because this place is sure to take your breath away (and not just because of the elevation).
How much should I budget for my Telluride Elopement?
It’s difficult to say exactly how much a couple should budget for their elopement in Telluride, as the cost will depend on a number of factors such as the size of the wedding, the location, the time of year, and the specific vendors and services you choose. However, as a general rule, you should expect to spend between $5,000 and $15,000 for a small elopement in Telluride. This cost will include expenses such as photography, florals, hair and makeup, transportation, and any other services you choose to include. If you want to keep costs on the lower end, you may want to consider eloping in the off-season, choosing a less expensive location such as a public lands area that doesn’t have a fee, and opting for fewer vendors and services. Alternatively, if you have a larger budget and want a more extravagant elopement, you may want to consider splurging on luxury services and amenities, such as a gourmet meal, a luxury accommodations, or a helicopter tour. Ultimately, the amount you budget for your elopement in Telluride will depend on your specific needs and desires as a couple.
Where to get your marriage license when eloping in Telluride
Time to make it official! If you’re planning on eloping in Telluride, you don’t have to obtain your marriage license from the San Miguel County Clerk’s Office, but it is located in town and super convenient. Located at 305 W Colorado Ave, the office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (just don’t try to go on a holiday, because they’re closed then). To get your license, bring your ID and a check for $30 (fees may vary). You’ll also need to provide your full name, date of birth, place of birth, and current address. Both you and your partner will need to appear in person, and if either of you have been married before, you’ll need to bring any necessary documentation, such as a divorce decree or death certificate. Once you’ve completed the process, you’ll be issued your marriage license on the spot and it will be valid for 35 days. Just don’t forget to bring it with you to your elopement ceremony – you can’t legally tie the knot without it!
Telluride and San Juan Mountain Elopement Tips
Prepare for the elevation
If you’re planning on eloping in the stunning mountain town of Telluride, it’s important to remember that the elevation is no joke. At 8,750 feet above sea level, Telluride is a lot higher than most of us are used to. To help prevent altitude sickness (aka “mountain misery”) and ensure that you have a smooth and enjoyable elopement, it’s a good idea to come to Telluride a few days early to acclimatize to the elevation. During this time, be sure to drink plenty of water (like, a LOT of water) to help your body adjust, and consider bringing a hydration supplement to help prevent dehydration. You may also want to bring ibuprofen to help manage any headaches or other symptoms of altitude sickness. Trust us, you don’t want mountain misery to ruin your big day. By following these tips and being prepared for the elevation, you can help ensure that your elopement in Telluride is a total success.
Plan to have little cell service
If you’re planning on eloping in Telluride, it’s a good idea to download offline maps in Google before coming to the area. While most of Telluride has good cell service, there are some areas, particularly in the surrounding wilderness, where service can be spotty or non-existent. Having offline maps available on your phone can be a lifesaver in these situations, as it will allow you to navigate and find your way even without a cell signal. To download offline maps, simply open the Google Maps app, search for the area you want to save, and select “Download offline map” from the menu. You can then access the offline map at any time, even without a cell signal. By downloading offline maps before coming to Telluride, you can help ensure that you have reliable navigation available to you during your elopement and can fully enjoy your special day without any disruptions or delays.
Consider one of Telluride’s neighboring mountain towns
While Telluride itself is a beautiful and popular location for an elopement, it’s important to also consider neighboring towns as potential locations. Towns such as Ouray, Silverton, Ridgway, and Durango offer their own unique charm and beauty, and are often less crowded and touristy than Telluride. If you’re looking for a more intimate and off-the-beaten-path location for your elopement, these towns may be worth considering. Each town has its own unique character and offers a range of beautiful backdrops for your ceremony, from mountain peaks to charming main streets to picturesque parks. Plus, with so many outdoor activities and attractions in the surrounding area, you and your partner will have plenty of opportunities to explore and create unforgettable memories on your special day.
Have your Telluride Elopement on a weekday
Want to elope in Telluride but trying to avoid the crowds? Consider eloping on a weekday! While weekends are the most popular time for weddings, choosing a weekday for your elopement can give you the gift of solitude. Plus, it’ll be easier to book vendors and services, and you won’t have to worry about anyone photobombing your special day. Plus, think of all the awkward small talk you’ll avoid with strangers when you’re trying to get that perfect elopement photo. So if your schedule allows, consider eloping on a weekday for a more intimate and peaceful experience.
Hire a photographer that is local to the area
When it comes to choosing a photographer for your elopement in Telluride, it’s often better to hire someone who is local to the area. A local Colorado elopement photographer will have a deep understanding of the best locations for photography, as well as the most beautiful times of day to take photos. They will also be familiar with the local weather patterns and will be able to adjust their plans accordingly if necessary. In addition to having a wealth of knowledge about the area, a local photographer will also be able to provide recommendations for other vendors, such as florists, hair and makeup artists, and officiants. Overall, hiring a local photographer will help ensure that your Colorado elopement in Telluride is smooth and stress-free.
Elope During Sunrise
It’s important to keep in mind that the mountains can create their own weather patterns, and afternoon summer thunderstorms are common in the Telluride area. These thunderstorms can bring heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds, which can be a challenge if you’re planning an outdoor Colorado elopement. To help ensure that your elopement goes off without a hitch, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan accordingly. If you’re planning an elopement at any outdoor location in Telluride, consider eloping earlier in the day to avoid the threat of afternoon thunderstorms. This can help you avoid any potential weather-related disruptions and ensure that your elopement goes as smoothly as possible.
Activities that can be included for your Telluride Elopement Packages
Explore a Mountain Pass
Rev up your engines and hit the trails! The Telluride area is home to some of the most beautiful mountain passes and 4×4 roads in the country, perfect for an adventure-filled elopement. Whether you want to take on a challenging off-road trail or just take in the scenery from the comfort of your vehicle, there’s something for everyone. Even consider hiking a mountain pass! They don’t have to be explored by vehicle. Hiking a mountain pass is one of the best ways to find solitude with the best mountain views!
Explore downtown Telluride
The charming main street of Telluride is a must-see during your elopement. With its many boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops, there’s always something to do. Plus, the laid-back mountain town vibe is unbeatable.
Explore a turquoise blue alpine lake
Who doesn’t love a good alpine lake? The Telluride region is home to many beautiful ones, each one more picturesque than the last. Take a dip, have a picnic, or just sit back and soak in the stunning surroundings.
Take the free gondola
One of the most popular attractions in Telluride, the free gondola takes you from the town of Telluride to the mountain village of Mountain Village. The ride is absolutely breathtaking, with stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
Hike
From easy strolls to challenging backcountry routes, the Telluride area is home to many beautiful hiking trails. Spend a day exploring the region on foot and discover all that it has to offer.
Car hike
For those who don’t want to do a lot of walking (or those who want to take in the views in comfort), a car hike is a great option. Drive to the top of one of the local mountain passes and take in the stunning views from the comfort of your vehicle.
Renting a 4×4 Jeep
Ready to take your Telluride elopement to the next level? Rent a 4×4 Jeep! Not only will it allow you to explore the beautiful region and access some of the more remote locations for your ceremony, but it’ll also give you a chance to feel like a total boss. Just think – you and your partner, tearing up the trails in your very own Jeep. There are several rental companies in the area to choose from, including Cliffhanger, and our personal favorite: DriveDiff. You can also try Turo, which is like Airbnb but for cars! Just be sure to book in advance (especially during peak season) to secure your ride. And don’t forget – some of the more remote locations may require a 4×4 vehicle to access, so a Jeep rental is a practical choice as well. Happy trails!
Via Ferrata
Feeling brave? A via ferrata (Italian for “iron way”) is a unique and exciting way to explore the mountains. These routes involve climbing along fixed metal cables and ladders, and are sure to get your heart racing. If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable elopement experience, The Via Ferrata in Telluride is a must-do. Just be sure to have a head for heights and a good sense of balance!
Best Time of Year to Elope in Telluride & What to Expect for Each Season
In our opinion, Summer is the absolute best time to elope in Telluride, hands down. The weather is warm and sunny, making it the perfect time for an outdoor ceremony. And with the longer days, you’ll have plenty of time to explore and take in all that the region has to offer. Plus, the wildflowers will be in bloom and the peaks of the surrounding mountains will be dusted with the prior spring’s snow – it’s basically a postcard come to life. Sure, it’s peak tourist season, but if you’re willing to be flexible with your plans, the crowds won’t be too bad. All in all, if you want to enjoy the beauty of Telluride and have the time of your life, summer is the way to go.
Winter
If you’re a fan of snow-capped peaks and cozy mountain town vibes, then winter might be the perfect time for you to elope in Telluride. The biggest benefit of a winter elopement is the lower crowds – you’ll have the place practically to yourself! Just be prepared for the possibility of cold weather and potentially tricky road conditions. And if you’re hoping for a white Christmas, this is the time to go for it.
Spring
Springtime can be a bit of a toss-up when it comes to eloping in the Telluride mountains. While the weather can be beautiful and mild, it’s also quite unpredictable. In May, there is often still snow on the hiking trails at higher elevations, which can make accessing certain locations difficult. Additionally, spring showers or snowstorms can pop up at any time, so it’s important to come prepared for all weather conditions. That being said, if you’re willing to take the risk and don’t mind the possibility of cooler temperatures and the occasional snow storm, spring can be a beautiful time to elope in Telluride. The wildflowers will be starting to bloom and the days will be getting longer and warmer, making it a great time to enjoy the beauty of the region. Just be prepared for the possibility of inclement weather and you’ll be sure to have a memorable elopement.
Summer
If you’re all about warm, sunny days and outdoor ceremonies, then summer might be the perfect time for you to elope in Telluride. Just be prepared for the crowds – this is peak tourist season in the region. And don’t forget to pack your umbrella – afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer months. But if you don’t mind the crowds and the potential for wet weather, then go for it – the region is absolutely stunning in the summer.
Fall
As the leaves start to change and the air becomes cooler and crisper, fall becomes a beautiful time to elope in Telluride. Fall is our second favorite season to elope in Telluride. The aspens turn a golden yellow, making the mountainsides look like they’ve been sprinkled with fairy dust (or, you know, autumnal foliage). The weather is also generally cooler and crisper, making it the perfect time for an outdoor ceremony. And while it’s true that fall can be a bit unpredictable weather-wise, it’s usually not as crowded as the summer months, which means you’ll have more space to enjoy the magic of the region. So if you want to feel like you’re eloping in a real-life enchanted forest, fall is the time to go for it in Telluride.
Permit Info for Eloping in Telluride
Do you have to have a permit to elope in Telluride?
Permits are super important, but try not to put too much worry on the subject. We’ve found that many of the park officials in Colorado are super friendly, and they always want the public to be able to enjoy all that the outdoors have to offer. Sure, some locations may require a permit, but that’s what your elopement photographer is for – to help you navigate all the details (including permits). Work with your elopement photographer to figure out what permits you might need, and then chat with a park official to get all the deets in writing. And whatever you do, don’t forget to bring your printed-out paperwork with you – no one likes a digital copy on a phone (no matter how fancy that phone might be). Follow these steps and you’ll be able to elope smoothly and stress-free. Plus, you’ll avoid any potential run-ins with the permit police (which, let’s be real, no one wants).
Are the permits included in the Telluride Elopement Packages?
The permits aren’t technically included in our Telluride Elopement Packages, but we will help you navigate the permit process should an elopement ceremony permit be required.
How to get to Telluride?
Ready to make the journey to Telluride for your Colorado elopement? There are a few options for out-of-state travelers. The most convenient option is to fly into Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which is about an hour’s drive from Telluride.
