Tips & Ideas to Make the Most out of Your Colorado National Monument Engagement Pictures

Timing is Everything

They say the early bird gets the worm, but in this case, the early bird gets the best light! The golden hour (shortly after sunrise and just before sunset) is the primo time for dreamy, romantic photos. Plus, who doesn’t love a good excuse for a cozy cuddle when the sun sets?

Location, Location, Location

With so many incredible spots in Colorado National Monument, you’ll feel like kids in a candy store. Here are a few fan favorites:

  • Independence Monument: A majestic sandstone monolith that will make your love story feel larger than life.
  • Book Cliffs View: Let your love soar with sweeping views of the Grand Valley as your backdrop.
  • Window Rock: Peek-a-boo! This natural window is the perfect frame for some playful and intimate shots.
  • Serpents Trail: Take a walk on the wild side down this historic, winding path with show-stopping views and rockin’ formations.

Incorporate Props and Personal Touches

Make your engagement shoot uniquely yours by incorporating fun props or personal touches that scream, “Hey, that’s us!” From a colorful picnic blanket to a vintage bicycle, let your personality shine.

Dress for the Occasion

Channel your inner fashionista and choose outfits that complement the natural beauty of Colorado National Monument. Earthy tones like browns, tans, and rust colors will make you look like you’ve stepped straight out of a boho-chic fairytale. And remember, happy feet make for happy photos, so opt for comfy shoes!

Enlist a Pro

Who you gonna call? A professional photographer! (me!) They’ll be your photo-wielding superhero, knowing the best spots, lighting tricks, and poses to make your engagement session a smashing success. Going with a professional Colorado National Monument engagement photographer like me will ensure you’re getting the photos you’re dreaming of having!

Weather or Not

Colorado weather can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to check the forecast before your engagement session. Be prepared to reschedule if rain or high winds are expected, as these conditions can make photography challenging and potentially unsafe.

Permit Info: Snapping Photos Legally and Park Entrance Fees

Before you start envisioning those dreamy engagement photos, it’s essential to know the ins and outs of permits and park fees for your Colorado National Monument engagement pictures. Don’t worry; I’ve got the scoop for you!

Photography Permit

A photography permit may be required for professional photography sessions, like engagement shoots, within the park. It’s always a good idea to check with the park’s administration to ensure you’re following the rules and avoiding any last-minute surprises. I’m more than happy to help you navigate the permit process to ensure your engagement session goes off without a hitch.

Park Entrance Fees:

Now, let’s talk about park entrance fees. Colorado National Monument charges a fee for entering the park, which goes towards maintaining and preserving this natural treasure. At the time of writing, the entrance fees are as follows: Private Vehicles $25, Motorcycle $20, Individual (bicycle, hiker, or pedestrian) $15.

Keep in mind that fees may change, so it’s wise to verify the current rates before heading to the park for your engagement session. You can find more information on the National Park Service website.

By being prepared with the necessary permits and information about park fees, you can focus on enjoying your engagement session, knowing you’re in compliance with the park’s regulations. So, let’s get ready to capture your love story in the mesmerizing landscape of Colorado National Monument!

Kat + Luke’s Colorado National Monument Engagement Pictures

Kat + Luke reached out to us after they found us through Wandering Weddings. They were planning on having an intimate adventure wedding in their home state Colorado. I was so ecstatic that a couple just two neighborhood over from ours was looking to work with us! I always see our couples as our friends, so it was really nice knowing they lived so close. After they booked us for their adventure wedding Kat reached out and asked about potentially getting some desert engagement photos taken. 🏜 Our summer was pretty much booked up, but we both found a Saturday that we were both free. Yay! I suggested Colorado National Monument for their engagement pictures. Luke went to school in Grand Junction, so the area was familiar to him and it offered the desert vibe Kat was going for. Perfect!

Grand Junction is known for their mountain biking, being really hot in the summer, and as being home to the Colorado National Monument. At the time of their session, we were still living in Denver, but throwing the idea around of moving to Grand Junction, so I was super excited to have the opportunity to photograph a couple here! The green foliage compliments the red canyon walls so well. Kat wore this perfectly put together outfit. They were so in love. It was magical.

Hi, i’m Kelly!👋I photograph small weddings & elopements for couples looking to escape traditions. Based in Grand Junction, Colorado
Colorado🏔️& Moab🏜️

Why do couples elope? 🧐 If you’re on the fence a Why do couples elope? 🧐 If you’re on the fence about eloping, I think you’ll enjoy reading this post. Over the last 5 years of photographing elopements full time, i’ve asked every couple i’ve worked with this question, “why did you decide to elope?” And guess what? All of their answers centered around the same theme. 👇 These are real answers on why couples decided to elope 👇 ✨ We prefer a private moment and experience
✨We began planning a wedding, but felt it was not the right fit for us, we want our wedding to be intimate and about us and our relationship
✨We want our day to actually be OUR day with the people who are closest to us
✨The only thing I have ever wanted for my wedding day is to be in the mountains with the people we love the most
✨We just want a day for us and our people to celebrate
✨We want an unforgettable wedding day Notice how the common theme is around an experience, privacy, and an emphasis on wanting the day to feel “theirs”. How sad is it, that when a couple is planning their wedding day, the ONE day where it should be centered around them, they might get the feeling of, “why am I doing this? This is turning into something I don’t want. This isn’t about us anymore.” If you’re in the middle of planning your wedding, and it’s starting to feel more stressful than exciting, then maybe an elopement is right for you. I’d love to chat with you and explain how all of this works so you can make that decision. Because you deserve a wedding day you can look back on and think, “We really did that. I’m so proud of us.” My summer is filling up quick, but I still have plenty of availability for this spring, and fall. Whether you want to romp around the Moab desert, or explore the Colorado mountains, i’m here to help you make your elopement dreams a reality. .

✨ Waterfalls in Colorado ✨ Oohhhh these are some o ✨ Waterfalls in Colorado ✨ Oohhhh these are some of my *favorite* places in Colorado. Most of the waterfalls shown here are completely hidden gems, and every time I’ve been there, there’s no one else there. It feels like we stumbled upon a secret spot, always taking our breath away, and a true “I can’t believe we’re here” moment… The kind of place that makes everything else fade out for a minute, and it’s just you two. If you’re wanting to go to one of these waterfalls in Colorado on your elopement day, I’d love to take you there! The fist step is reaching out via the form on my website 😊 .

In just 8 months the Colorado mountains are going In just 8 months the Colorado mountains are going to look like 🍂 this 🍂 👆 But not only does the fall foliage make for stunning wedding day pictures, it’s the perfect time to get married outside. You can expect warm crisp mountain air, ranging from 50 to 70°F, and that Colorado sunshine makes it feel even warmer! 🌞 If you start planning now, we can have everything planned in just about a month or so. I’ll suggest a few of the best spots for fall foliage, help you decide which date would be best for that spot (spoiler alert: mid day elopements are always the best choice), set you up with the best vendors in the bizz (you can stop googling now), and I’ll plan out a timeline to make sure we’re at the right place at the right time to get the best pictures. There’s no secret. It’s all just detailed planning from an experienced elopement photographer who lives here in Colorado, and who’s been doing this full time for 5+ years, anddddd who’s worked with over 100 couples. It’s me, I’m the expert! 👋 😊 Let’s start planning your next great adventure, together. .

I’m not usually one to wish away a season. I love I’m not usually one to wish away a season. I love them all! But this winter has been especially grim — not a lot of snow fall meaning not a lot of snowboarding 😢 So I’ve found myself day dreaming about warmer weather 🌞 And it got me thinking about all the amazing couples I get to work with this coming summer, and all the couples I’ve worked with in prior summers. There are so many things about summer in the Colorado mountains that I love. The flowers, the shimmering blue alpine lakes, all the hiking trails, the sunrises and sunsets just hit different in the warm mountain air, and everything is green and lush and beautiful. Lindsey + Pete eloped last summer in Crested Butte. The weather was messing with us all morning. A little bit of rain didn’t scare us off though! And at the end of the day, those afternoon thunderstorms they were calling for never even happened! 👏 We had so much fun that day. If you’re thinking of spending your elopement in the Colorado mountains this summer, don’t wait to reach out. I only have a few more dates available! .
